David Beckham in KC VBlog

I love this video blog of the KC-LA MLS game in Kansas City. The 2:23 mark has the best video of his confrontation with a fan that I have seen.

Hey Becks, here before you, here after you, here despite you

Reuters summed up the entire Becks/MLS situation the best:

He was supposed to be the man who would take soccer in the United States to the next level yet David Beckham is in danger of becoming an embarrassing liability to the game in the country. On a weekend when 65,000 people turned out for a friendly match in Seattle, 82,000 watched a Gold Cup game in Dallas and the U.S. national team continued their impressive form with another victory, the soccer news was all about Beckham being booed by his own fans.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

David Beckham to leave MLS to play for England?

David Beckham is ready to leave the Los Angeles Galaxy to play for England in a friendly against Holland in Amsterdam next month, according to The Telegraph website on Tuesday.

The newspaper is reporting that Beckham told the English national team that he is available for the game despite Galaxy coach Bruce Arena objections.

The friendly will be on August 12 and is sandwiched between two Galaxy games. They have a game in Boston against the New England Revolution on the 8th and a home game on the 15th against Seattle Sounders FC.

Holland, who reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2008, is considered an important match for the team.

The attitude of England manager Fabio Capello, however, is that there can be no special treatment for any player while Beckham would consider the schedule to be manageable.

There is also a realisation that Capello believes friendlies are important and it could amount to international suicide for any player to miss an England get-together.

Normally, this would not be a big deal. But it is not good for a player who is getting a reputation as a “me” guy. HeĀ  is picking fights with fans and the general belief is that he would rather be playing anywhere else.

This will not go over well if he does go.

Can Beckham make up his mind?

He says he wants to keep getting paid (errr, playing) in Major League Soccer for the reminder of his five-year contract, according to an article in ESPN.com.

Before, he said that he wanted to leave the MLS to play for AC Milan.

Before, he said that he would never play for a English Premier team that was not Manchester United.

Now, he said that that is open to playing for another team in the EPL.

Hmm, Remind me again about what Landon Donovan said about this guy:

Does the fact that he earns that much more money come into it? Yeah. If someone’s paying you more than anybody in the league, more than double anybody in the league, the least we expect is that you show up to every game, whether you are suspended or not,” Donovan was quoted as saying in the book. “Show up and train hard, show up and play hard.”

“He’s not shown [he’s a good teammate],” Donovan added, according to the book. “I can’t think of another guy where I’d say he wasn’t a good teammate, he didn’t give everything through all this, he didn’t still care. But with [Beckham], I’d say no, he wasn’t committed.

I have not really said a lot about this spat. But 2 quick thoughts:

1. You noticed that Landon never apologized or backed away from his comments. His only regret was that he did say that to Beckham’s face.

2. The fact that the he is making a ton of money is what’s stopping him from leaving to Real Madrid or AC Milan or ManU.

I don’t have a problem with that, but just own it. Say, “These guys are paying me a ton. I am going to bust my tail to increase football’s visibility in the States.”

You notice he’s not saying that.

So thanks Becks for proving Donovan 100 percent correct.

P.S. How many people have publicly voiced support for Beckham after Donovan’s comments were made public?
